Might have to take a pilgrimage to Papa Joe’s Saloon sometime in November. Without a pea shooter, of course.

I’m disappointed I didn’t know about him or Bluegrass Underground.
I did manage to catch Ralph Stanley while he was still performing. I drove all the way to the Grand Ole Opry one year when he was scheduled, only to find out (by asking someone who worked there halfway through the show) that he had canceled.
The next year I drove to some hole in the wall in southern Kentucky to see him perform. He was just a shadow of his old self, sadly, but I’m glad nonetheless.

Also, if you’d like to know how Billy Joe played an integral part of Outlaw Country’s launch from the Texas music scene to the national spotlight, here you go (thank Mike Judge). The scene starts at a Dripping Springs, Texas music fest :

You probably know Shaver if you listen to outsider country. He’s wrote a lot for Jenning and Nelson etc.

Tales from the Tour Bus, on Cinemax. The entire first season is about country musicians, usually from the Outlaw Movement (since Mike Judge is from Texas, he has a fondness for that sub-genre), but includes George Jones. Season 2 is Funk and MoTown. WILD ASS STORIES, set to funny animated reenactments and told first-hand by the people who did them/saw them.
Kinky Friedman is the unexpected hero of the first season.

He wrote all of Waylon’s Honky Tonk Heroes, except for one song.

An awesome cover of a song about the legend of Billy Joe Shaver.

Seriously, I might need to go there sometime in November. I feel the draw of it, like driving out near Fredericksburg and seeing the sign for the turn to Luckenbach.
